Their first day

Helene and my dad really hit the ground running despite their 16 hours of traveling to get to Kaohsiung from Johannesburg! We came home, threw their bags down and met with Grace at a beautiful tea house down the road from where we live. I never knew it was that gorgeous inside! Trust the tourists to get the resident to see the special places...
We drank tea, twirly, swirly style out of those little cups without handles and we ate an assortment of snackies ranging from sweet potato chips and deep fried pumpkin cakes to deep fried bread dipped in condensed milk.

After a quick stop at the local temple and short nap, we hit the Yucheng night market. Every isle offered something new to eat! Dumplings, strawberries, Chinese guava and finally 50 Pizza's hawaiian pizza with corn on.

Looking forward to another good day!

Yay!

It could happen today

It's amazing how differently a person can feel at the start and at the end of a day. So much happens in the twenty-four hour slot in every single human life. I have heard that one of the most depressing things for people who lose a loved one is the fact that life goes on almost ruthlessly around them. The news gets read on the radio, the TV commercials keep coming on, traffic is the same and in general nobody seems to think something is amiss.
On the flip side, you never know when you're going to have a fantastic day. Edith Schaeffer puts it like this in her book "L'Abri", "The thing about real life is that important events don't announce themselves. Trumpets don't blow, drums don't beat to let you know you are going to meet the most important person you've ever met, or read the most important thing you are ever going to read, or have the most important conversation you are ever going to have, or spend the most important week you are ever going to spend. Usually something that is going to change your whole life is a memory before you can stop and be impressed about it."
Four missionaries came to our buxiban today. Thirteen pairs of eyes stared at them while they explained about their lifestyle as crew members on the Doulos ship. It was all very low key and simply done. Introduce yourself, tell about the ship, read a story about a sheep that goes missing but is found again by a very determined shepherd, share a testimony and voila: a little spark opens the heart and mind of a little person in a life changing way. It's absolutely astounding what God can do. For my students, living where they do, the mere fact that four foreigners, of four different nationalities are speaking to them in English about Jesus is a treat. My student David afterward said this," Teacher, when she said she was like the lost sheep, I UNDERSTAND!I UNDERSTAND!"
I was dog tired when I woke up this morning. Tonight I'm going to sleep with such a hope swelling in me that I think I will burst of joy.

Kiddie fun

The Taiwanese really know how to host a kid party! Here is my very good friend's daughter having a ball with the other little ones.
